School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS)
The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) is positioned as a global centre of excellence in ocean, earth and atmospheric research. Our faculty members hold a wide range of experience and include internationally renowned climate change researchers.
Established in 1991, the School was the first in Canada to combine the disciplines of earth and ocean sciences in one program and to focus on earth system science. Specialities in geology, geophysics, geography, oceanography and atmospheric sciences have been integrated into a single school.
SEOS faculty are active in thirteen distinct research groups, engaging in research covering the full geoscience spectrum from acoustical oceanography to climate modelling. With the assistance of post-doctoral fellows and research associates/assistants and the use of specialized research facilities, these groups are on the forefront of geoscience technology.
We are located in one of UVic’s newest buildings, a world-class research facility. The building includes “clean rooms” used to avoid contamination during measurement of minute concentrations of elements in seawater and freshwater. We also have office/lab space at the Marine Technology Centre.
